Oct 31, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With Amendment Two on the ballot in Kentucky’s upcoming election, local and state leaders are publicly voicing their support or opposition, sparking active debate.
On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear, along with various faith leaders and public officials, gathered at Consolidated Baptist Church in Lexington to express opposition to the amendment. Those speaking out included State Representatives George Brown and Cherlynn Stevenson, Lexington Councilmember Tayna Fogle, and the governor’s senior adviser, Rocky Adkins. According to the governor, Amendment Two could divert essential funds from public schools to private institutions, which he argued would negatively impact public education.
“They are seeking a constitutional amendment that will allow them to take money from our public schools and send them to private schools,” said Gov. Beshear. “That means, under the concept of math and subtraction that I was tought at Fayette County Public Schools, our schools will have less to educate our children.”
Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul and other advocates argue that Amendment Two would benefit the education system, allowing for more educational opportunities. Paul believes the measure would strengthen overall access to educational resources in Kentucky.
The outcome of the vote on Amendment Two could shape the future of school funding across the state.
