FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — An army specialist has been charged in connection to the murder of a solder from Indiana at Ford Leonard Wood in southern Missouri.
Officials with Fort Leonard Wood said 21-year-old Wooster Rancy, with the 5th Engineer Battalion, is facing preliminary charges of murder and obstructing justice concerning the disappearance and death of Sergeant Sarah Roque, 23, of Ligonier, Indiana.
The charges were brought forward on Oct. 30 by the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel.
Officials said Rancy hails from North Miami, Florida, and served as a combat engineer with the 509th Clearance Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, after joining the army in 2022.
Officials said the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
An investigation was launched on Oct. 21 after Roque did not appear for formation at Fort Leanard Wood in southern Missouri. Roque's death was quickly deemed to be a homicide as a "person of interest" was brought into custody.
Roque served in the Army since 2020 in various roles, including bridge crewmember and a mine dog handler for the 5th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood. Roque also received the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
