WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Firefighters who were busy dealing with grass fires for most of the afternoon and evening on Tuesday will continue to monitor the burned areas for hot spots during the night. A field fire in Butler County forced evacuations before it was brought under control. A fire in Ellsworth County closed several miles of I-70 for over an hour. Farmers were asked to help with a fire near the Osborne/Smith county line. A fire in Sumner County burned up to 500 acres. Sedgwick County crews dealt with a fire along K-96 near 215th Street West. With the wind threatening to spread the flames faster than one fire department can handle, counties rely on help from their neighbors. The fire in Butler County took nearly a dozen fire crews to contain. It scorched about 200 acres. Don Larason works just over a mile from the fire. "That was quite a few firetrucks. I don't think I've seen quite that many all at the same time," he said. Severe weather possible in parts of Kansas Wednesday The Kansas Forest Service said some areas are more vulnerable than others. "My colleagues throughout the United States are calling this an anomalous fire season," Bill Waln, Kansas Forest Service state fire management officer, said. His job is connecting fire departments to resources where rural areas can be especially vulnerable. "We have great firefighters in the state of Kansas," Waln said. "Unfortunately, over the past few years, we've seen the number of firefighters, especially volunteer firefighters, dwindle." That concern was not a factor in Butler County. "Call early, call often is kind of a motto in the volunteer fire service, and I think this is a prime example of why you should do that," Douglass Fire Chief Aaron Guyot said. Over 10 departments, mostly comprised of volunteers, stopped the fires, sometimes less than 100 feet from homes and businesses. Firefighters say they will monitor hot spots that pop up for the next few days.
