There’s fan interference, and then there’s what happened Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Yankees fans sitting along the right-field foul line at World Series Game 4 brazenly grabbed Mookie Betts‘ arms after he made a catch at the wall, and one of them pried his glove open in an effort to release the ball. The shocking incident occurred in the bottom of the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 win, when Gleyber Torres sliced a 1-0 fastball from Dodgers pitcher Ben Casparius into foul territory. After Betts leaped to make the catch, a fan grabbed the right fielder’s glove while it was still on his left hand. Another fan grabbed Betts’ right hand as the original fan removed the ball from Betts’ glove. “I didn’t even know he grabbed my hand, so I’m perfectly fine,” Betts said afterward. "Well, A for effort." I’m fine, he’s fine, everything is cool. We lost the game, and that’s what I’m kind of focused on: turning the page and getting ready for tomorrow.” Both fans were thrown out of the game, an NYPD officer involved with their removal told the Daily News. The officer added that the fans are regulars and that he expected them back for Wednesday night’s Game 5. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Casparius, who is from nearby Westport, Conn. It was the second instance of fan interference involving Torres in the 2024 World Series. In the ninth inning of Game 1, a fan reached over the left-field wall at Dodger Stadium and caught a long drive off Torres’ bat. It was ruled a double, and the score remained 2-2. The Dodgers went on to win that game, 6-3, in 10 innings.
