BOSTON (WWLP) - Comedian Tony Hinchliffe called Puerto Rico "a floating island of garbage" at a New York City Trump rally this weekend, sparking criticism from Massachusetts lawmakers. Springfield Representative Carlos Gonzalez describes himself as a "proud Puerto Rican." "Such language is offensive and disrespectful to the people of Puerto Rico," said Gonzalez, who represents the 10th Hampden district. "There can be no more excuses, who you surround yourself with defines who you are." Senator Adam Gomez, who represents Hampden county and is also Puerto Rican, spoke out as well. "For centuries, we have endured colonization, discrimination, and marginalization from both the Spanish and the United States," said Gomez. "The resilience and culture of the Puerto Rican people deserve respect and dignity, not derision." Senator Gomez pointed out some of the significant contributions of his community, from military service to sports achievements to community organizing. Governor Healey also responded to the controversy, saying "the over 300,000 Puerto Ricans who live in Massachusetts are essential to the fabric of our state." "They are our business owners, health care workers, students, elected and community leaders, and veterans who bravely served our country," said the governor. The Governor also said she wants the commonwealth's children to grow up in a society that welcomes and celebrates Puerto Rican heritage and culture. This comment at the Trump rally renewed both lawmakers' and Governor Healey's calls for Massachusetts voters to elect Kamala Harris.
