Shelby County election officials prioritizing voters' safety

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Many are concerned about their safety as tensions remain high around the country ahead of next Tuesday's election.
With a contentious presidential election that has strongly divided people, problems can arise.
Just this week in Oregon and Washington State, some ballot boxes were set on fire.
Nothing like this has happened here in Shelby County but election officials here are still trained to stay ready.
"We have a lot of security in place," said Linda Phillips, a Shelby County Election Administrator.

While elections here have a history of being safe, Phillips said they are prepared.
"We do a lot of planning and we work closely with law enforcement," Phillips said.
And at a time when polls workers are on the front end having to assist voters and also deal with any voting issues and complaints, they too are being trained.
"We trained them on how to evacuate the building. We've trained them on things to look for. They've all had Narcan training. There have been instances where people have mailed fentanyl-laced mail to election offices," Phillips said. "So we have a protocol for opening the mail, and Narcan available if there should happen to be fentanyl in a letter."
There is also a process to keep the ballots secure, especially as the electronic and paper votes are put in locked boxes and carried from poll sites over to the election commission.

"There are electronic trackers in all of our equipment," Phillips said. "So, we will know where it is at all points in time."
Phillips said there are no known threats in our area.
People who want to exercise their voting rights hope it stays that way.
"I am more concerned about our military and who will be commanding us," a voter said.
