Editorial note about graphic antiabortion ad airing on FOX4
Oct 29, 2024
You may see a graphic political ad on air during commercial breaks on our station. FOX4 recognizes the images in the ads are difficult to watch. This is an explanation as to why TV stations are required to air all political ads, even the graphic ones.
The ad is from presidential candidate Randall Terry and his running mate, Pastor Stephen Broden. The anti-abortion ad features very graphic and disturbing imagery, and the ads have been purchased on many stations across the country, including during national programming like the World Series on FOX4.
When, where does early voting start for Kansas City, Missouri metro voters?
According to the FCC rules, which FOX4 is required to follow, it is illegal to block or modify these ads in accordance with federal law. While Terry is not on the ballot in Missouri or Kansas, he meets the FCC’s requirement for a “legally qualified candidate” nationally, which allows him to air his paid commercials on Fox stations. As a result, those ads must also run on FOX4.
The FCC generally does not:
Review or pre-approve the content of political ads before they are broadcast
Ensure the accuracy of statements that are made by candidates and issue advertisers
Require broadcast stations and other regulatees to provide all sides of controversial issues
Oversee the nature and extent of the coverage that individual candidates receive under the news exemption
If you would like to provide feedback or have additional questions on the requirements, you can call the FCC Consumer Complaint line at 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).
