ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Saturday kicked off the first day of Early Voting for the 2024 Election. Voters were excited to be among the first to cast their ballots, while election officials worked hard to make sure everyone got to the right location. Early Voting started at 9 a.m. Saturday. Larry Staub with the Monroe County Board of Elections spent most of the day at Empire State University, and said the lines started way before. "We had two ladies here at 7:30 in the morning with lawn chairs wanting to be the first in line, and we didn't open till nine o'clock, so they were out here for an hour and a half," Staub said. That line stayed pretty long all day, but not everyone started at the right place. Just after noon, Monroe County Commissioner Lisa Polito Nicolay and Commissioner Jackie Ortiz sent an important message to voters: the polling site listed on post cards is for Election Day on November 5. One location for Election Day set up a sign to remind voters it is not an early voting site. "A lot of people here [think], 'Oh, I can vote early, so I must be able to go to the polling site I always go to.' That's not the case for Early Voting. We have 17 identified sites in Monroe County for early voting," Staub said. One designated location was ready to help voters cast their ballots: The Susan B. Anthony House. Those who went Saturday said the line went on for hours along Madison Street. News 8 spoke with some voters about their motivation to vote as early as possible. "I think that this is a pivotal voting season, and I think there are a lot of issues that affect women, that affect minorities, marginalized communities, and we need to get out there," Cynthia Mingori said. "I live in Rochester, there's a woman who fought for us to have the right to vote. I should take advantage of the fact that I can do it early and do it here for her," First-time voter Kaitlynn Schmitz said. Early Voting kicks back up Sunday morning starting at 9 a.m. For a full list of Early Voting locations for eligible voters, click here.
