Those were the two main story lines out of Saturday’s first-year Colonial Valley Conference Tournament title game as Hopewell Valley hung on for an exciting 1-0 victory over the Redbirds. Extending its unbeaten streak to 17 straight games, Hopewell Valley (16-2-2) did not outplay Allentown (12-6-1) on the its home Ackerson Field pitch. What it did do was make an early goal stand up by withstanding a furious and prolonged assault by Allentown to draw even in the second half. As a result, Hopewell Valley won its first tournament title since beating Princeton Day in the 2016 Mercer County Tournament title game. Allentown, meanwhile, now has an 0-7-1 record in its last eight appearances in either MCT or CVC tourney  championship games. The goal came 14 minutes into the first half when Katherine Reinhart booted a perfect 40-yard free kick that sailed over the head of Allentown keeper Olivia Cieslak and dipped under the crossbar. This proved to be pretty much the end of the Hopewell offense as Allentown increasingly controlled play as the game went along. The last 10 minutes were particularly frenetic as Allentown repeatedly stormed the Hopewell goal, only to be turned back by Valley Girl senior keeper Chloe LiVecchi. Allentown unleashed 12 shots and LiVecchi was credited with nine saves. None of them were bigger than when she was able to tip a shot over her head into the cross bar and then pinned the ball against a goal post after it fell to the ground inches from the goal line. This ended up being the biggest difference in the game because while Hopewell was able to save a high and dipping shot, Allentown did not. “We all work together,” said LiVecchi, who has yielded just five goals during her team’s 17-game unbeaten run. “Allentown is a great team and really came after us, but I know I can trust our defense.” The amazing thing about LiVecchi is she had never played in goal prior to this year. “Coach (John) McGinley told the team we needed some one to play goalie and it ended up being me,” said LiVecchi. “He’s all about having everyone do what’s best for the team.” Allentown was able to put pressure on Hopewell by often controlling the midfield and getting attacking runs from the likes of Jadelyn Sayrafe. “I think the midfield opened up a bit for them because we were more focused on stopping their two players (Amanda Hoglund and Martha Olorunnisola) up front,” said McGinley. “Fortunately, Chloe really came through for us and made some great saves. You could see her getting better as the year went along and she became more comfortable in goal.” Allentown (12-6-1) 0 0 – 0 Hopewell Valley (16-2-2) 1 0 – 1 Goals: Reinhart. Shots: A-12. HV-5. Saves: A-Cieslak 1, DeCarlo 1. HV-LiVecchi 9.
