U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials released more details about the crash in which two migrants died and an American citizen was hospitalized after a pursuit in Otay Mesa Tuesday. The names of the man and woman killed were not immediately released, pending notification of their families. The driver, a U.S. citizen, suffered injuries believed to be not life threatening. The incident began after video surveillance operators reported possible smuggling activity involving an Infiniti sedan less than a mile from the Otay Mesa Port of Entry around 9:35 a.m., federal investigators said in a news release Friday. Officials said when a border patrol agent drove over to check the situation, the sedan took off and struck the officer’s vehicle. Officers could not immediately find the car afterward. About six hours later, camera operators reported seeing two people climb over the secondary border barrier near the same location and enter the sedan that had been previously involved in the crash, CBP officials said. A Border Patrol canine unit in a vehicle saw the sedan traveling west on state Route 905 near Britannia Boulevard and attempted to stop the car. The suspected vehicle allegedly ran through a stop sign and accelerated to 100 mph, CBP officials said. Seconds later, the sedan struck the back of a Caltrans vehicle, rolled and came to rest upside down near the middle lanes of the highway, investigators said. Two of the sedan’s occupants were ejected. The woman, a Mexican citizen, died before she could be taken to a hospital. The man, also from Mexico, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he died about five hours later, investigators said. The driver survived and was taken to the same hospital. The California Highway Patrol and county medical examiner’s office are investigating the incident. CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing it. Homeland Security and Inspector General were notified.
