HAMILTON — It was personal for Jairus Williams. The Ewing senior quarterback didn’t get to play in last year’s meeting with Hamilton West and also he wanted to make his final high school game a memorable one. He accomplished his mission. Williams engineered an effective Blue Devil offense on the ground and in the air to finish the season with a very impressive 21-6 win over West in a West Jersey Football League Valley Division game on the Hornets turf on Saturday. Ewing started the season 0-5 and have shown a lot of character and determination winning three of the last four games to cap off the season with a 3-6 record and 2-3 in the division. “Our defense has been playing lights out over the last four/five weeks and the culmination was today,’’ said Ewing coach Ross Maddalon. “We came through and didn’t allow them any touchdowns.’’ The Ewing coach was impressed with Williams and the offense, as well. “Offensively, we did a great job in the first half and it was because of Jairus Williams, said Maddalon. “This might not be exactly how he wanted his senior year to go, but he persevered, he’s a team captain for a reason. He’s a born leader.’’ Hamilton West, which never got untracked offensively, falls to 2-6 and 2-3 in the WJFL Valley. The Hornets have Lawrence and the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Steinert on the schedule., “Personally, I wanted to go out with a win,’’ said Williams. “Last year, I didn’t play against West so it was a little personal and I knew this year we wanted to go out early and take control.’’ The Blue Devils did that right in their first series. Facing a third-and-seven at their own 32 yardline, Williams dropped back and found Rashaun Williams, who made a great catch, for a 68 yard scoring toss. It was just Jairus Williams’ second passing touchdown. “We just wanted to make the best of all the opportunities we had,’’ said Williams. “I have to thank my team and the brothers I’ve made on this team I love all of them. I could not have done it without them.’’ Williams was 12-for-103 on the ground and 1-for-3 for 68 yards through the air. Ewing had Cordell Sloan with 52 yards rushing, including a 3-yard TD run, Josh Missick has 43 and RaShaun Williams had 17. Things really got decided in the second half as the Blue Devils grabbed a 21-0 lead before a Grady Schaffer 30-yard field goal got the Hornets on the board in the closing seconds of the half. Hamilton was driving in the second half when Ewing’s Tyson Brown came out of a crowd with the ball and raced 46 yards to the end zone for a 13-0 lead. “We had the lead and they had the first down and then I see Tyson (Brown) coming out with the ball and running towards the end zone,’’ said Maddalon. “It was one we’ll take.’’ It’s been a strong finish for the Blue Devils and it’s far from the team that started the season 0-5. “We have fighters and not one kid quit on this team,’’ said Maddalon. “They came to work and it’s paying off and they deserve every second of it.’’ Ewing (3-6) 6 15 0 0 – 21 Hamilton West (2-6) 0 3 3 0 – 6 E – R.
