FONTANA — Summit High’s all-everything Mark Mitchell III ran for four touchdowns to lead Summit to a 38-0 victory over Jurupa Hills on Friday night. Mitchell gained 225 yards on 13 carries. The senior running back added some highlights when he ran for a 15-yard gain on a fake punt, and he brought his point total to 26 by running for a 2-point conversion. “In 15 years of coaching, I’ve never had as good a leader as Mark,” Summit coach Nicholas Matheny said. “He’s a super player and a super person. Summit (8-1, 2-0 in Sunkist League) will play at Eisenhower on Thursday to decide the Sunkist League championship. Eisenhower defeated Kaiser 38-14 on Friday night. Summit had control of the game after Daniel Bonilla had a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 2:13 remaining in the opening quarter. Shea Garner recovered a fumble at the Jurupa Hills 38-yard line, and after a timeout, Mitchell ran for a touchdown on the next play and the Skyhawks led 15-0. The Skyhawks added a safety in the second quarter for a 17-0 advantage. The quality of play was somewhat disappointing to Matheny. “We probably played our worst half of football this year,” said Matheny, who was satisfied with his defense, which posted its third shutout in the past six games. “Our linebacking corps and defensive line play very hard, and the secondary is the most improved part of our defense.” Summit had several penalties and turnovers in the first half. “This is a big game for us and we may have gotten a little tense,” Matheny said. “We always play hard and that covers a lot of errors.” Mitchell had second-half touchdowns of 35, 65, and 31 yards. Each one seemed more impressive, especially the final touchdown with 10:25 to play. Mitchell bounced away from shoulder contact with a defender, moved left to escape, and raced left to the end zone. How did he do that? “It’s hard training and experience,” Mitchell said. “All of our team is involved and contributing.” The team’s success isn’t a surprise to Matheny. We have junior Skyhawks programs at several levels.” It was a tough game for Jurupa Hills (2-7, 0-2). Already playing with reserve quarterback Syirai Johnson, the Spartans lost Johnson to a broken collarbone on the third play of the game. “After that, we became one-dimensional,” Jurupa Hills coach Tom Leach said. “We really couldn’t get our offense going.”
