When President-elect Donald Trump nominated then-retired Gen. John Kelly as his secretary of homeland security in 2016, he said that the 4-star Marine’s “decades of military service” made him “the ideal choice.” When in 2017 Trump named Kelly as his chief of staff, he called him “a great American and a great leader” who had done a “spectacular job” at DHS. Today, Trump considers Kelly a “degenerate” and a “low life.” Has Kelly really changed or is Trump just bothered that Kelly, who swore an oath to country and Constitution, has gone on the record telling America about Trump, who he calls a “fascist”? The general’s bombshell is that Trump frequently praised Adolf Hitler, saying the Nazi dictator “did some good things” and proclaiming, without shame, “I need the kind of generals Hitler had.” This is absolutely outrageous talk, but what does it mean? New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a moderate Republican who backed Nikki Haley and now supports Trump, observed: “We’ve heard a lot of extreme things about Donald Trump, from Donald Trump. It’s kind of par for the course and kind of baked into the vote [for Trump] at this point.” That is going to be the same conclusion as tens of millions of good-hearted Americans voting for Trump, who correctly are horrified by any Hitler admiration or having generals who answer not to the Constitution, but to a leader’s whims. It’s Trump being Trump.  The same goes for Trump musing about deploying the armed forces against his domestic political opponents. In an interview with Fox News, Trump telegraphed his intention to turn the military on what he called “the enemy within.” The direct quote: “We have some very bad people. We have some sick people, radical left lunatics. And I think they’re the big — and it should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military, because they can’t let that happen.” Trump and his allies say it’s about drug cartels and dangerous foreigners who’ve snuck into the country. Or did Trump mean California Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff? It’s part of Trump’s appeal to many to be brash and unbounded, from his very first day as a candidate railing that “when Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” It’s also part of the opposition to Trump that repels many. There were cheers and boos at his language when he rode down the escalator into the basement of Trump Tower. But Trump steamrolled the rest of the Republican field in 2016 and won the White House. And he never stopped being Trump. Not in his four years in the Oval Office and not in the four years since he left office. Early voting has already recorded tens of millions of votes and if the public opinion polling is accurate, those votes are evenly split between Trump and Kamala Harris. With the country so divided and images in the minds of so many of Trump so well formed as either a hero or villain, Kelly’s revelations about the former president aren’t likely to shift those perceptions. Trump fans, like Sununu, will discount it and for Trump foes, it will add to their ire. Just 10 more days to go.
