NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — 4 years after the original French Quarter shooting, and 2 years after the New Orleans police officer's subsequent death, the perpetrator has been found guilty. According to information from New Orleans Police Department Superintendent of Police Anne Kirkpatrick, Donnell Hassell has been found guilty on all charges regarding his responsibility for the death of Trevor Abney in 2023. Man, woman found dead inside Slidell home In October of 2020, Abney, while sitting in his patrol car with his partner, was shot in the face by a man riding in the back of a pedicab. Hassel was identified as the shooter and arrested the next day. At the time, he was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer. Two years later, however, Abney died due to complications from a cerebral gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide. Former St. John the Baptist Parish deputy accused of simple battery Abney, who had previously been in the National Guard, toured Iraq, and volunteered as a fire fighter prior to joining the NOPD, was laid to rest at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery. Kirkpatrick spoke on the verdict, saying, "My heart goes out to Trevor’s family, whose courage and strength have been remarkable throughout this painful journey. This verdict stands as a reminder of our unwavering commitment to honor and protect those who serve our community. Officer Abney’s legacy will forever be a part of the New Orleans Police Department."
