FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A man faces decades in prison after shooting an officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department when he was confronted about a burglary earlier this year.
Zar Ni Myint, 20, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of attempted murder, burglary, and possession of a machine gun. He faces a total of 30 years in prison.
On June 13, FWPD investigated a burglary at a home in the 4700 block of Holton Avenue. According to Allen Superior Court documents, Myint had broken into the home and was still there when police arrived. He was then accused of shooting an officer with his fully automatic handgun.
Although police returned fire and hit Myint, he ran away, according to court documents.
A short time later, someone driving in the area reported Myint had approached their car saying he'd been shot by police.
That evening, someone else called police to report a man – who was bleeding and didn’t have shoes or a shirt on – had asked them for a ride.
Officers eventually found Myint hiding in the 1300 block of Fairfax Avenue. He was treated at a hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was then taken to the Allen County Jail.
The officer who'd been shot was also stable after being treated at a hospital.
As part of Friday's plea agreement, two charges would be dropped if the judge agrees to the deal at Myint's sentencing: aggravated battery - a Level 3 felony - and resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony.
Myint's sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 18.
