(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said on Thursday, Oct. 24 police received multiple calls about a person carrying a rifle causing the lockdown of a high school in downtown Colorado Springs. Police said on Thursday, a little before 10 a.m. police received two separate reports of a Hispanic or White man carrying an AK-47. The first report detailed that the suspect was at East Boulder Street and North Wahsatch Avenue and police immediately responded. The second call was relayed by a third party and indicated the suspect was more than a block west on the north side of Palmer High School. Although there was no indication or information that the school or students were being targeted, police said out of an abundance of caution CSPD's School Resource Officers immediately worked with school security to place the school on lockdown while more resources responded to the area. After over an hour of extensive searching, police were unable to find the suspect. Officers spoke with an eye-witness, who confirmed via a photo of the suspect, that they were a person known to police who frequently carries a folding scooter. Police said the scooter is equipped with a rifle sling and flashlight in a manner that makes it look like a rifle. CSPD said while the setup is understandably alarming it is not criminal and the suspect is not being charged.
