An injury cost Jon Berti a spot on the Yankees’ World Series roster. The speedy infielder suffered a hip flexor injury while running the bases in the Yankees’ ALCS Game 4 win in Cleveland last week and did not recover enough to face the Dodgers in the Fall Classic, manager Aaron Boone revealed Friday before Game 1 in Los Angeles. “Unfortunately, time ran out for him to be ready,” said Boone, who confirmed Berti would have made the roster if healthy. “So that’s a blow for us. I feel like he plays a really important role for us.” Berti remained on the Yankees’ ALCS roster but was not available in their series-clinching Game 5 victory over the Guardians, according to the manager. The 34-year-old Berti started two games at first base in the ALDS in place of the injured Anthony Rizzo, then started there again in ALCS Game 3. He entered in the ninth inning of Game 4 as a pinch runner for Rizzo and came around to score what proved to be the winning run in that 8-6 victory. Acquired from the Marlins in a late-March trade, Berti appeared in only 25 games for the Yankees in the regular season due to groin and calf injuries. He hit .273 with a home run and five stolen bases. Primarily a third baseman, Berti was part of the Yankees’ first-base solution after Rizzo suffered two broken fingers on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch on Sept. 28 in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Berti had never appeared at first base in an MLB game before the ALDS, but he split time at the position with utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera during that round with Rizzo out. Rizzo returned for the ALCS and was in the Yankees’ starting lineup as the first baseman in Game 1 of the World Series. The loss of Berti, who led the majors with 41 stolen bases in 2022, dings the Yankees’ team speed and infield depth in the World Series. “I know he’s bummed out about it,” Boone said. The Yankees opted to roll with 13 pitchers against the Dodgers after carrying 11 in the ALDS and 12 in the ALCS. “Probably was going to go [with] 13 pitchers regardless [of Berti’s injury],” Boone said. Nestor Cortes, who missed the previous two rounds with a left elbow flexor strain, made the Yankees’ 26-man World Series roster.
