ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) -- Preparations are underway for this Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon, where thousands of marines, veterans and supporters will participate in the race. The Marine Corps Marathon, established in 1976, is one of the largest marathons in the world. Since the race does not offer prize money, it is known as the "People's Marathon." More than 60 charities have partnered with the marathon to raise funds for various causes, including medical research, military support and education. The fundraising event is expected to draw over 100,000 spectators to Arlington and the District, with more than 30,000 Marines and runners registered for the marathon. Due to construction, this year’s runners are in for a special treat. The path of this year's 49th Marine Corps Marathon will take runners in front of more iconic monuments.  Marine Corps veteran and founder of Ameri-cans, Patrick Ford, is running the marathon for the seventh year in a row. “I think changing up the route is a fantastic idea, especially for our group who runs it every year,” said Ford. "A change in route takes your mind off the pain.” 49th Marine Corps Marathon: Road closures, Metro service impacts in DC area The new course will offer runners views of famous monuments such as the Martin Luther King Jr. and Thomas Jefferson Memorials. Ford will run the marathon to raise funds for the Travis Manion Foundation. “We know that the foundation, as a result of those funds, is delivering a massive impact on families of the fallen and also helping veterans transition successfully,” Ford said. D.C. police also warn drivers that there will be several street closures and emergency no-parking areas, and all cars parked in these areas will be ticketed and towed.  The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) urges runners and spectators to take the Metro to get around. All lines will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday for the marathon.
