(KRON) -- A campaign poster for Milpitas City Council was vandalized with racist graffiti, an incident that candidate Bill Chuan is calling “appalling and disheartening.” The anti-Asian graffiti was found on a banner along Barber Lane.
According to the Milpitas Police Department, there has only been one other reported incident of “graffiti with hate based rhetoric” within the city in the past five years. “That incident was not similar to this nor did it occur in this area,” Milpitas PD told KRON4.

In a statement, Chuan said, “Hate crimes are not acceptable anywhere, especially in Milpitas, in any shape or form.”
Police said that the incident does not reflect the values of its “diverse and inclusive community” and are investigating the vandalism.
