MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A new poem is taking over Municipal Park Playground in Germantown. It is a part of the city's push for more public art that brings resident's ideas and artwork to life. "Dropping a Wheel" is a poem by Julian Ostmann. "I wanted to, like, write a poem about me getting on a two-wheel bike for the first time when I was six years old. And so from that I started adding more things," said the fifth grader. It only took about a day for the masterpiece to be entered into Germantown's poetry contest led by Cat Peña. "When the poems were coming in, I would peek and I would read 1 or 2 here and there. And then his poem, It was the only one that made me laugh out loud," said Peña, public art and design manager for the city of Germantown. Out of entries from all ages and skill levels, this year's winner is 11 years old. "I was really happy. I was very excited," said Ostmann. "Kind of feel kind of famous." Peña says the idea of the contest is art for Germantown by Germantown residents."There's not a lot of public art opportunities or public art projects out here. And so I think it's really important that people start seeing themselves in their communities. And this is just one way of doing it," said Peña.
