HAC focuses on critical issues such as self-determination, the protection of Hawaiian cultural practices and the preservation of sacred sites. Kumu Lum explained, “Our mission includes addressing economic development in a way that benefits those in need while also protecting Hawaiʻi’s natural resources.” He highlighted the importance of holding public servants accountable to the values in order to ensure that policies align with the needs of the community. “Aloha is at the heart of our values,” Kumu Lum stated. “It’s about caring for our members and the broader Hawaiian community. Kuleana means we must actively participate and contribute to the well-being of all in Hawaiʻi.” He stressed that taking care of the land is intrinsically linked to the survival of the people. “If we take care of the ʻāina, our people will thrive,” he said. The caucus advocates for the belief that every individual in Hawaiʻi deserves dignity and access to essential resources. This includes safe housing, nutritious food and quality education. “We push for an economic system that addresses existing inequalities,” Kumu Lum explained. “Our kuleana is to make informed decisions that ensure justice and righteousness for all.” Knowledge is a core value for the Hawaiian Affairs Caucus. “Seeking knowledge enables us to make sound decisions,” Kumu Lum noted. He believes it’s essential to recognize the ʻāina as a living entity that requires our stewardship. “This perspective reinforces our commitment to sustainability and the respect we owe to our ancestors,” he added. “Malama kupuna is about honoring those who came before us,” Kumu Lum emphasized. “We show respect by living according to the values they instilled in us.” He expressed the belief that community collaboration is vital for achieving their goals. “We invite all members to join us with aloha and engage in respectful discussions,” he said. Kumu Lum is optimistic about the future of the caucus and its potential impact on both local and national politics. “I truly believe that with these values, we can help Kamala Harris and Jim Waltz succeed in the White House,” he stated confidently. He underscored the need for unity in pursuit of shared objectives. The Hawaiian Affairs Caucus, under Kumu Lum’s leadership, stands firmly for the values of aloha, kuleana and mālama ʻāina. By prioritizing the well-being of the Hawaiian community and holding public servants accountable, they aim to foster a future where everyone can thrive in harmony with the land and one another.
