ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With Election Day just weeks away, one topic of conversation: Prop 1. Advocates claim the proposition would add multiple protections under the Equal Rights Amendment of the State's constitution. Those in support of Prop 1 say it would add age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and pregnancy outcomes to the list of protections under the Equal Rights Amendment. They add Prop 1 could close loopholes in the State's constitution to ensure no New Yorker would be discriminated against. Advocates continue push in support of Prop 1 ahead of Election Day However, the Coalition to Protect Kids who hosted Thursday's rally believe the ballot amendment would undermine religious liberties, parental rights, and girls-only sports. On the topic of girls-only sports, faith leaders said they have verified Prop 1 could mandate New York schools to allow biological boys on girls' sports teams and emphasized that would "rip away safe spaces and places women can thrive." "We fought really hard a long time over the years, in order to have our own safe spaces and to have places that we can thrive, and now they're just kind of being ripped away from us," Coalition to Protect Kids Campaign Director Ayesha Kreutz said. Opposers also noted vague language in Prop 1. "For our women and for our religious institutions, and the overarching issue that we're seeing today is within the proposed changes that they're asking us to vote for on this constitutional amendment are vague. There are no definitions on some of the categories, and we all want equal rights for everyone, but in the end, when we have a constitutional amendment, it should be clear and succinct," Kreutz said. News 8 talked with advocates for Prop 1 earlier in the week. "Our rights are on the line, we cannot afford to have our rights rolled back as they have been in so much of the us, so we urge everyone to protect our rights, all our rights," League of Woman Voters President Barbara Grosh said.
