Oceanside police have zeroed in on a suspect they believe killed a homeless man earlier this month and released his picture in hopes someone will come forward with his name or whereabouts. The homicide is one of two fatal beatings of homeless people in the city in early October. A third unhoused person survived a stabbing — all inside a less than 2-mile stretch near the coast. Police previously said they don’t know if the incidents share any connection and did not mention the other attacks when releasing the photo Tuesday. Oceanside police said the man is suspected of an attack that was reported the afternoon of Oct. 5, when someone found a person dead near the railroad tracks along Oceanside Boulevard and Coast Highway. The spot is roughly a mile south of the Oceanside Transit Center. The 65-year-old victim had sustained blunt-force trauma. Police have not released his name but said this week that investigators believe he was killed the day before he was found. A man wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred on Oct. 4, 2024, in Oceanside. (Oceanside Police Department) Oceanside police released photos of the suspected assailant, who they said was last spotted at the Oceanside Transit Center boarding a northbound Amtrak train at 3:40 p.m. Oct. 4. Investigators are hoping the public can help identify him. “We are actively pursuing leads, but community support is crucial. Any detail, no matter how small, could make a significant difference in resolving this case,” the department said in a news release. The suspect was described as a Black man between 5 feet, 7 inches and 6 feet tall, and weighing about 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Police said he wore a light gray hoodie, a gray trucker hat with a white mermaid logo, dark cargo pants and dark shoes. Police said people are advised not to approach the man, “as he may be considered dangerous.” They asked people to instead contact law enforcement immediately. The other two incidents involving attacks on homeless people included a 45-year-old man stabbed multiple times near Coast Highway and the San Luis Rey riverbed on Sept. 18. He survived. Then late on the morning of Oct. 6 — a day after the Oct. 4 fatal attack was discovered — someone called to report finding a man dead in the brush along the San Luis Rey riverbed, near the bike path west of the freeway. Like the victim found the day before, the 60-year-old victim had sustained blunt-force trauma. Two days later, Oceanside’s police chief held a news conference at which he noted the three attacks. He cautioned that they were not known to be connected but advised unhoused people in the community to stay alert, stay together and avoid sleeping alone.
