BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Earlier this week, 17 News reported Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez was being investigated by the District Attorney's Office for allegedly allowing her office to use county resources for political purposes, violating state code. Wednesday afternoon, 17 News learned Perez's opponent in the race -- Kim Salas -- may also be under investigation by the DA for the same reasons. Right now, it's a lot of he said she said by Kim Salas -- on the defense -- and Christian Romo, who filed the complaints with the Kern DA, California Department of Justice and California Fair Political Practices Commission -- on the offense. Leticia Perez’s husband challenges man criticizing the supervisor during meeting The only thing the DA's office told 17 News on Wednesday was: "The District Attorney's Office can neither disclose nor confirm any information regarding the existence of an investigation." Romo is Chair of the Kern Democratic Party and chief of staff and campaign manager for Leticia Perez, but he emphasizes he filed the complaint as a private citizen. He told 17 News over the phone that he confirmed with Assistant District Attorney Joseph Kinzel Wednesday afternoon that an investigation has begun. 17 News last spoke to Salas Wednesday afternoon; she said she hadn't heard from the DA's office. Romo is alleging Salas campaigned while working as the district director for Assemblywoman Dr. Jasmeet Bains during the MLK Prosperity Neighborhood event Tuesday night. Salas vehemently denied those allegations to 17 News, saying she was not there on state time nor for campaigning purposes. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. That's the right thing to do. This is an attempt to blame someone else for her own actions! Just like she's blamed Supervisor Couch, just like she's blamed Kern County Prosecutor's Association and just like she's blamed everyone else for her own mistakes!" With less than two weeks until the election, all eyes are on how a potential investigation into Salas and the investigation into Supervisor Perez could influence the voters.
