FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- While the City of Fort Wayne's 2025 budget was the main topic at Tuesday's Fort Wayne City Council meeting, councilmembers also approved an ordinance for $239,000 in funding to expand the city's Urban Trail. A final decision on the proposal has been delayed multiple times at previous meetings because some councilmembers are concerned with the design of the trail. The original proposal would have taken away part of the northernmost lane of Washington Boulevard in downtown Fort Wayne. Urban Trail vote delayed again as Washington Boulevard concerns persist Tuesday's approval of funding did not necessarily alleviate those concerns, and the new proposal did not specify a new route for the Urban Trail extension. However, City Council agreed that adding to the Urban Trail would be beneficial for the city and wanted to approve funding for the project since it would be derived from ARPA funds, which need to be allocated before the end of 2024. "We're going to move forward in faith [and] in anticipation that we can work out a deal that makes sense with Community Development," said 2nd District Councilman Russ Jehl. City Council does not meet for the next two weeks, and it is unclear when the proposal will be discussed again.
