BAKERSFIELD, Caif. (KGET) -- Whether you mail-in your vote, vote electronically, or on paper, every ballot is printed and processed through the Kern County Elections Division. If you mail-in your ballot, the first place it goes is the signature check machine, which sorts the ballots. If the signatures differ from the one the county has on file, that ballot is rejected. That voter is then sent a cure letter that allows them to sign the ballot again, if it matches the second time, the vote counts, if it doesn't match, the ballot remains unopened and does not get counted. Ballots are then processed through a tabulator machine, if you vote in-person your ballot is immidiately sent to the tabulator then logged electronically. Aimee Espinoza, who is the county clerk-auditor-controller and registrar of voters says this is a safe method to count votes. "The system is on a local network, it's not connected to anything else, it's not connected to internet," said Espinoza. "It's not connected to the county's network...we have a separate server and the only thing that server runs is our voting system." Espinoza also mentioned the countless hoops the division goes through to make sure these machines process the ballots correctly. "All of the machines you see behind me, anything we're gonna use for the election is tested. We also test our ballot marking devices to ensure that what is being tested is actually the selection that's being made." Two teenagers detained after pursuit, crash: Ridgecrest PD A 1% manual tally is required by state law, in which the division takes a random sample of ballots, and hand counts them. Then, they compare it to the results in the voting system. On top of that, a county audit of the election division takes place to ensure the machines count the votes correctly before the general election. Charles Shinn, an election integrity advocate, expressed concerns over the Tabulator machines. "The tabulators are a very controlled item, and they don't allow anyone post election to look at the tabulated result and compare that to the ballot result," said Shinn. An assistant U.S. Attorney will serve as the eastern district election officer, handling complaints and concerns on election day. The elections office said that the results of the audit will be sent out on Friday, October 25th.
