ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — As previously reported, some Rochester residents will soon receive notices regarding water line services.  By November 1st, the city plans to notify about 13,000 customers whose water service lines have been identified to contain lead, 3,300 whose lines might contain galvanized steel, and another 17,000 customers whose lines are made from an unknown material. A combination of will be sent out to over 30,000 residents.  Ian Scott, an engineer for the Rochester Water Bureau says that he wants to emphasize if you receive this notice, it does not mean there is lead in your drinking water. “It is only the lead in our water services that goes to various homes and businesses,” says Scott. This is part of the city’s ‘Get the Lead Out Together’ program, where they hope to remove all lead containing water service lines by 2030.  To date, the city says they have replaced more than 8,100 lead service lines and they are on track to remove nearly 3,000 lines per year. Currently, Scott says, there are five ongoing projects, and they have been doing these projects since 2018. City residents can request lead testing at any point to their home free of cost. More information about the program, as well as where residents can look up the material of their water service line and get updates on current lead service line replacement projects can all be found on the city’s website.
