YOSEMITE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Is Yosemite really one of the "most dangerous" national parks? According to a recent study, it is — but not really. According to the study, the goal of the research was to reassure the most cautious adventurers that American parks are incredibly safe, hence the air quotes around “most dangerous” in the headline. Search for Stacey Anne Arras, missing in Yosemite since 1981 The study was done by KÜHL; the company describes itself as one of the remaining few privately owned and independent companies in the outdoor space. The study looked at the safest and "most dangerous" national parks in the U.S. The study analyzed up to 16 years of data on total deaths, missing persons, search and rescue missions, trail closures, park ranger presence, number of visitors and proximity to hospitals. The study determined that the National Park of American Samoa is the safest national park. The park is located in the South Pacific and spans across three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta‘ū. The Mount Alava Trail on Tutuila offers the most Instagram-worthy views of the island and the surrounding ocean.  The study says the National Park of American Samoa has no deaths reported, missing people or rescue missions. To look at the data for the "most dangerous" national parks in the U.S. the study addresses what seems to be a common denominator, the remote location, extreme weather conditions and unpredictability as well as higher chance of interacting with wildlife. Based on their KÜHL score Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska is the "most dangerous" national park. The study lists that in total the park has had 1,633 rescue missions and 169 deaths. Going by their KÜHL score, the Central Valley has a park that is number nine on the list and that is Yosemite National Park. According to the study, 11 people have been reported missing at the park and there have been 1,641 rescue missions and 164 deaths, while stating it has had over four million yearly visitors. The top 10 "most dangerous" list is below: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona Isle Royale National Park in Michigan Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska Big Bend National Park in Texas Dry Tortugas National Park in Florida North Cascades National Park in Washington Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas Yosemite National Park in California Channel Island National Park in California In conclusion, the study says the research shows visiting national parks is very safe, even more so with proper preparation.
