BUTLER COUNTY (KSNT) - State law enforcement are investigating what they now call a "suspected homicide" in the El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) Tuesday afternoon. The correctional facility notified the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (KBI) of a suspicious death around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Kansas Department of Corrections said 40-year-old Brooks Vonthaer died Tuesday while he was at the El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF). According to state statutes, the KBI is required to investigate deaths of prisoners in custody of Kansas jails and prisons, unless the inmate who died is being regularly attended by a physician or the death is ruled natural by autopsy. Holton man sentenced for killing Topeka mom, 2 kids in 2023 house fire Investigators say that Vonthaer was found unresponsive in his cell by corrections officers at 5 p.m. on Oct. 22. He had sustained several fatal injuries. Medical personnel pronounced him deceased a short while later. The KBI said a 33-year-old was found to be in connection to Vonthaer's death. The individual was incarcerated at the EDCF and was Vonthaer's cellmate. The investigation is ongoing at this time. Findings will be presented to the Butler County Attorney's Office for charges to be determined. All charges are pending at this time. For more local news, click here.
