OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - A new program at Putnam City Schools is aiming to increase their pool of substitute teachers. It includes tiered compensation and incentive packages to also help retain them. Teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grow forever. However, as easy as some teachers make things look, it’s harder than it appears. LOCAL NEWS: Nation’s best college golfers take center stage at OKC Golf & Country Club "Teaching is not easy,” Dir. Of Communications with Putnam City School District AJ Graffeo said. According to Graffeo, that’s especially if you’re a substitute teacher. So, to try and recruit and retain substitute teachers, the district is using their Guest Teacher Program that the district passed on Tuesday night. "We want to make sure that our education just keeps going in the absence of our full time teachers,” Graffeo said. Subbing under the program has benefits that can increase based on the number of days you work. For instance, daily rates start at $75 for non-certified subs and $95 for certified or degreed subs. "After 60 days work, they get an additional payment of $300. After 90 days, it goes up to $600,” Graffeo said. “After 120 it goes to $1,050." After 120 days the daily rates also rise and stay at $110 for non-certified subs, and $130 for certified or degreed subs. The fays worked don’t have to be consecutive either. "It's our jobs on the back end to just make sure that that support is there from the district,” Graffeo said. The program is retroactive to the start of the school year. To learn more, visit putnamcityschools.org.
