GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- An officer's use of force in a fatal shooting in Greensboro earlier this year was justified, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the office of Guilford County District Attorney Avery Crump. On June 26 around 8:28 a.m., Greensboro officers were sent to Crestridge Road when they were told about a domestic situation between Titus Kopp, 28, of High Point, his grandmother and her daughter. The grandmother had left her home due to her grandson’s behavior and called 911. She told a dispatcher that Kopp had broken into her home, was ransacking her home and was threatening to kill her, her daughter and himself. Upon arrival, Officer Petruzzi saw the grandmother sitting on the curb crying. She said “her grandson just got out of jail, broke into her home and was threatening to kill himself with a knife”. When asked if he was alone, she responded, “He’s got my daughter in there. I can’t get in”. Petruzzi continued to talk to the grandmother as they walked toward the house. About midway up the driveway, Kopp ran out of the house with a knife. He said, “I have no intentions of living” as he ran down the stairs toward Petruzzi with the knife raised so the point was facing the officer. Petruzzi asked Kopp to put down the knife, but Kopp continued coming towards Petruzzi with the knife raised. Petruzzi then shot Kopp twice. He went to Kopp’s side to render aid. Kopp was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries. A silver “Farberware” brand knife with a silver handle was found on the driveway. Officer Petruzzi’s statement of events is fully confirmed by his body-worn camera video, officials say. "Based on the findings presented, Petruzzi’s use of deadly force under these circumstances was justified by both the common law principle of self-defense and by the statutory provisions of NCGS 15A-401(d)(2), which permits the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer to defend himself or another from what he believes to be the imminent use of deadly force," the statement reads. The district attorney’s office will not recommend the filing of a criminal charge.
