FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (WANE) — A soldier originally from Ligonier was found dead in Missouri, not long after she was reported missing. Now, the U.S. Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is working to figure out what led to her death. Sergeant Sarah Roque, 23, was a bridge crewmember who served as a Mine Dog Handler with the K9 Detachment in the 5th Engineer Battalion, according to a Facebook post from the Army. She'd been stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, where she completed Basic Combat Training after enlisting in 2020. According to the original post, she didn't report for her morning duties earlier this week and no one was able to get in touch with her. Tuesday, the Army announced Roque's body had been found. Further details of the circumstance were not released. The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood team is deeply saddened by this devastating loss, and we send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow Soldiers of Sergeant Roque. Sergeant Roque was a daughter, sister, friend and Soldier who chose to serve our country bravely and honorably. Her passing has caused a tremendous void throughout our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources and support to those who are affected during this difficult time.” Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general Roque's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
