BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The allegations against Supervisor Leticia Perez and staffer Christian Romo are that they violated county law. David Brust, who made those claims during public comment at a Board of Supervisors meeting on Oct. 8, said Romo used county resources to hold political meetings and interviews."I have two questions for Supervisor Perez, are you aware Mr. Romo has clearly and repeatedly violated county law and if not, what does that say about your ability as a county supervisor?" Brust said at the meeting. Brust cites a Democratic Central Committee meeting Romo held in which a screenshot shows Romo on Zoom in Perez's county office. Another screenshot apparently shows him doing a political interview about the Democratic National Convention also in the supervisor's office. Romo makes $73,000 a year as Perez's Chief of Staff. He is also her campaign manager, and the chair of the Kern Democratic Party. While Romo did not respond to the allegations, he said via text, despite the search warrant they think the method the offices were searched was illegal or at the very least inappropriate. "Supervisor Perez is a repeat offender. Supervisor Perez has had multiple FPPC complaints against her, she has a Bar Association complaint against her, she pleaded no contest, which is basically guilty, to two charges of selling her office," said Brust. In 2017 Perez's husband, Fernando Jara, worked for Industrial Partner's Group, whose goal was to get regulatory approval of cannabis operations in the county. His contract was for $25,000. That summer, IPG met with Perez in her county office, then, she voted against banning commercial cannabis, she was the only supervisor to vote against that law. Perez pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of influence government decision for financial interest and for failing to disclose finances. Perez had to pay $30,000 to a non-profit, do 100 hours of community service, and take an in-person ethics course. The criminal case was dismissed. Perez also has an open case with FPPC for failing to disclose campaign contributions from 2022.David Brust also filed that complaint.
