(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand ALLENTOWN — Kim Maurer has had to call up players from the junior varsity and freshmen teams just to have enough to fill out a starting eleven given the amount of injuries the Allentown High girls soccer team is dealing with. Yet the Redbirds continue to win. Whether it was the Mercer County Tournament or now the inaugural Colonial Valley Tournament you can count on the Redbirds to be around when it matters most. Martha Olorunnisola scored twice, Helena Machnowsky had a crucial second-half goal and third-seeded Allentown advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 victory over sixth-seeded Lawrence on Monday afternoon. “The girls are just fighting through every single game,” Maurer said. “They got grit, they battle every single game and they are just fighting for wins.” Allentown (11-5-1) has made a habit of reaching the final of the county competition — it had reached six of the last eight MCT championship games — and is the semifinal stage of the CVC Tournament in its first edition. Asha Vohra gave the Redbirds control in the 27th minute when she knocked the ball in after a scramble inside the box. Olorunnisola got a shot away that was batted away by Lawrence goalkeeper Vlada Kachurak, but Vohra reacted to the rebound to give her team the lead. The Cardinals (10-7) got a lifeline against the run of play in 47 seconds before halftime after they worked a nice combination to get the ball to standout midfielder Becca Boggs on the left side of the box. Boggs then drew a foul inside the area and converted the penalty kick herself. Allentown reestablished the pattern of play right from the second half kick off and if not for a good save by Kachurak on Amanda Hoglund would have taken the lead. Eventually, the go-ahead goal arrived through Olorunnisola in the 53rd minute. The senior received a pass from Machnowsky, shifted the ball to her right footed and laced a shot into the top corner. Machnowsky, one of those freshmen team call ups, grabbed what turned out to be a crucial third goal when she burst between two defenders to latch on to a long clearance by goalkeeper Danielle DeCarlo. “We’re figuring out what our strengths are and putting ourselves in the right positions,” said Olorunnisola, who is up to 10 goals on the season. “I think that’s really helped us to play the game right and play to win.” Boggs made it interesting when she scored her second on a superb left-footed strike with 8:35 remaining. Lawrence had one more chance to grab an equalizer, but Boggs sent a free kick into the side-netting and Olorunnisola ensured safe passage to the semifinals when she won and converted a penalty kick with 1:12 left. “We’ve talked about responding to adversity and we just need to get better at it overall,” Cards coach Emily Palombo said. “When (we) go down, we can’t be dejected. We have to just fight back because we are fully capable of doing it.” Lawrence (10-7) 1 1 — 2 Allentown (11-5-1) 1 3 — 4 Goals: Boggs 2 (L). Olorunnisola 2, Vohra, Machnowsky (A). Assists: Machnowsky, Olorunnisoal, DeCarlo (A). Shots: 7 (L). 19 (A). Saves: Kachurak 10 (L). Cieslak 1, DeCarlo 1 (A).
