NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A local nonprofit has been raising money to continue cancer services in Northampton. Local riders in South Deerfield to raise funds for those impacted by cancer Bikes Fight Cancer is supporting two local cancer services by providing them with funds to fight against cancer. The Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital received $60,000 and Cancer Connection received $32,000. This was all made possible through various cycling events hosted by Bikes Fight Cancer where people were able to participate and fundraise for this good cause. The nonprofit raised money in its second year through fundraising at these cycling events. This summer, they hosted a charity ride where hundreds of riders came out to raise funds. Meghan with Bikes Fight Cancer says the nonprofit has grown over the years to be able to support these local organizations. "We grew from 100 people in 2019 raising only $14,000 to becoming a nonprofit last year and this year raising $170,000 with 600 people participating and volunteers all with the same mission of fighting cancer," said Meghan Morin. These funds will help to provide essential services to cancer patients, their caregivers, and families. The World Health Organization says that cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide and it can spread quickly so patients need to be able to receive the necessary treatment when it comes to this disease. This funding will allow these cancer organizations to continue their work and give patients the care that they need.
