HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — There are generations of knowledge inside some Guilford County classrooms, and it's all thanks to the Foster Grandparent program through Senior Resources of Guilford County. Lillie Tucker provides a second set of eyes and kind a heart, making sure kids in Ms. Drummer's first-grade classroom inside Oak View Elementary are paying attention. "They keep you moving, keep you going because you have to move with them, and it's a very rewarding way to spend your day," Tucker said.   A career educator herself, Tucker jumped at the chance to get back in the classroom. "Their little faces light up when I'm with them," Tucker said. "I have four students I'm assigned to long term for the school year, but I also help out the rest of them." She's one of the more than 50 people over the age of 55 who give their time and energy to be an extra hand in the classroom. "It's great to have Ms. Tucker in the classroom because it's an additional blanket of support," Principal Bennie Bradley said. Foster grandparents go through a background check and a 20-hour training. They can volunteer in the classroom anywhere from 20 to 40 hours a week. The foster grandparents also get a stipend through senior resources. Tucker has been volunteering for a year now, and she supports growing young minds by teaching them the lessons she wishes she knew. "We're sometimes overlooked because we've lived our lives, and we're getting older," Tucker said. This is a way for Tucker and others to show people they have a lot left to give. "My oldest senior that's working in this program is 88 years old, and she doesn't miss a day," Foster Grandparent Program Director Maderia Lewis said. "Once they've lived their lives and they're able to look back, they're able to share with those children their life experiences in such a positive way. It gets the children motivated to become better and to do better." It shows you're never too old or too young to understand the power of a helping hand. "They need a good job, a pat on the back or a wink from my eye to let them know they're OK," Tucker said.
