COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Hot Chicken Takeover, the central Ohio chain with a cult-like following, is launching a new menu with old favorites after being sold to the restaurant group owned by the former CEO of Jimmy John's. The Columbus chain rolled out a new menu last week that features hand-breaded chicken prepared using a recipe that is similar to how the chicken was made when the brand first launched 10 years ago. Other menu additions include chicken-fried steak, homemade hushpuppies, crispy fried cornbread and sweet hand pies. Shuttered Bob Evans in Dublin listed for sale "Southern roots run deep, and we're going back to where it all began," Hot Chicken Takeover announced on social media. "Our menu has a fresh new look, and we've expanded it with even more Southern comfort food that feels like home." The new menu comes after Untamed Brands, the chicken chain's former parent company, was purchased in May by another fast-casual restaurant company named Craveworthy Brands, which owns BD’s Mongolian Grill, Dirty Dough, Flat Top Grill, Genghis Grill and more. Craveworthy then announced plans to fold Chicago-based chicken concept Budlong into Hot Chicken Takeover. The two are now coming together to create a refreshed brand called "HCT: Southern Chicken," Gregg Majewski, founder of Craveworthy and the former CEO of Jimmy Johns, told NBC4. However, the chain will remain as Hot Chicken Takeover in Columbus, though customers may see the "Southern Chicken" branding used in certain parts of the restaurants and in advertising. Majewski explained Budlong's Chicago locations will soon bear the HCT: Southern Chicken name, as will new eateries outside of central Ohio. Gahanna beauty salon opens in former Old Bag of Nails At the time of the May announcement, Majewski had said he is a longtime fan of Hot Chicken Takeover and wanted to bring back some of the brand's elements that Untamed had taken away, like sweet tea and free ranch. Untamed had taken ownership of Hot Chicken Take in late 2021. Since its founding in 2015, the chicken chain has ballooned to seven restaurants throughout central Ohio, including a recent Grandview Heights addition and a location in Gahanna that opened early last year.
