Chaves County, Roswell faces intense flooding; 1 reported dead

CHAVES COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) -- Intense flooding hit Chaves County on Saturday, leaving residents trapped or stuck.
The New Mexico National Guard deployed help to the area, announcing they had rescued 290 people since the flooding began. They also stated that 38 people were hospitalized.

“We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the NM National Guard’s Adjutant General. “Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience, and we’re ready for this. We’ve worked all night, and continue to work with swift water rescue teams and other partner agencies to help our fellow citizens get to safety.”
It's reported that motorists were becoming stranded in their vehicles, and some were awaiting rescue on top of their vehicles. One death was reported, and search-and-rescue efforts are underway.
