Humans need a thorough course on ways to earn improved status as world citizens. That’s the reality of a Trentonian article about the 7th Annual Delaware River Cleanup in September. A report noted this recent cleanup included 300 volunteers at 21 locations along the Delaware River. Participants collected 22 tons of trash. Kudos to those involved in this amazing haul but a flip-side to this activity underscores a sad reality that many humans do not give a flying plastic water bottle about Earth. “Our WCPA crew was really pleased with the turnout. Students, parents, and retirees all joined forces to clear hundreds of pounds of trash along the Delaware at Washington Crossing State Park. It was a fun and rewarding day for everyone!” exclaimed Annette Earling, Washington Crossing Park Association Executive Director. In Trenton and elsewhere, school curriculums should include learning about nature and issues regarding trash, illegal dumping, access to safe drinking water, and developing respect for community. In some parts of the world, issues such as pollution of waterways register as almost insignificant as people do their part to maintain a level of cleanliness. Yes, removal of 22 tons of garbage from local waterways deserves major celebration, however, imagine if we could cut in half that high level of pollution. Mind you, whatever occurs upstream impacts areas downstream. Individuals can make a difference by picking up litter in their neighborhood. Every small effort helps protect waterways and natural spaces. If you see someone dumping or involved in illegal activities at any State Park, call the NJDEP at 1-877-927-6337 (1-877-WARN DEP). L.A.
