PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) — Brighton's Leyla Tozin and the doubles duo of Ava Youngblut and Hazel Jokl from Honeoye Falls-Lima were victorious on Saturday at the Section V girls tennis state qualifier. In a rematch of the Class A1 championship match, Tozin beat Victor sophomore Emily Miller in straight sets. Tozin won the first set 6-1. After a slower start, Tozin finished strong to win the second set 6-2. Tozin is going to the individual state tournament for the fourth time. The senior has won five sectional titles. As runner-up, Miller also advances to the state tournament. She did not drop a set in her road to the final. Taking the third state qualifier spot was Mendon junior Omika Patel. She beat her classmate and teammate Aiza Ahmed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Youngblut and Jokl won a marathon match in the doubles championship, defeating Sutherland's Jasmine Wu and Caroline Fitzsimons in three sets. The HF-L duo won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6. Wu and Fitzsimmons won the second set 7-5, but Youngblut and Jokl fought back to take the third 7-5. All four doubles pairs who played on Saturday already qualified for the state tournament thanks to their performances on Friday. Brighton's Ella Hall and Taylor Shoars lost to Youngblut and Jokl in the semifinals while Mendon's Abigail Mosher and Alix Ivy lost to Wu and Fitzsimmons. A third-place match was not played. The NYSPHSAA Girls Tennis Championships will be played on Monday, October 28th through Wednesday, October 30th at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, the site of the US Open. Last year, Tozin finished in third and she took fourth in 2022.
