Temecula Valley girls volleyball team tabbed for CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs
Oct 19, 2024
Temecula Valley girls volleyball coach Neemias Costa knows his team faces a challenging path in the coming weeks.
But it is a trip the Golden Bears are excited to take.
Temecula Valley beat Murrieta Valley on Wednesday to earn a share of the Southwestern League title and finished eighth in the final CIF Southern Section in-season rankings, now used in most sports to determine which playoff divisions teams are placed.
The Golden Bears (16-3) will compete in the Division 1 playoffs, which features eight teams each playing three pool-play matches and the winner of the two pools meeting for the division title. As the No. 8-seeded team, Temecula Valley will be on the road for all three pool-play matches: at No. 1 Sierra Canyon (Wednesday); at No. 4 Mira Costa (Oct. 29); and at No. 5 Marymount (Nov. 2).
“We have been talking about this all season. We have a great team and want to play with the best. Now we will get that chance,” Costa said after Wednesday’s win over Murrieta Valley. “It is a great thing for our program. We’re going to give it our best shot.”
Temecula Valley already has secured a berth in the CIF State playoffs by virtue of being one of the teams selected for Division 1.
Murrieta Valley and Etiwanda finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the section rankings and received high seeds in Division 2. Murrieta Valley (23-7) is the No. 2 seed and opens at home Wednesday evening against Ridgecrest Burroughs. Etiwanda is the No. 3 seed in the Division 2 bracket, and the Baseline League champs play host to Alemany in a Wednesday’s opening round.
Five other Inland teams finished high enough in the section rankings to be included in the Division 2 bracket.
Ambassador League champion Ontario Christian (29-6) is the division’s No. 9-seeded team and hosts Mayfield on Wednesday. Big VIII League champion Centennial (23-7) is seeded 11th and hosts Crescenta Valley on Wednesday, while Big VIII League runner-up Roosevelt (18-5) is seeded 15th and opens at home Wednesday against West Ranch. Citrus Belt League champion Redlands (21-11) is seeded 25th and travels to Santa Margarita on Wednesday, Ivy League champion Rancho Christian rounds out the Inland teams in Division 2. The Eagles (15-4) are seeded 29th and will make the trip to Oaks Christian on Wednesday.
Ivy League runner-up Paloma Valley is the No. 4 seed in the Division 3 bracket, The Wildcats (19-7) open at home Wednesday against St. Margaret’s.
Hacienda League champion San Dimas (21-7) is seeded third in Division 4 and hosts El Dorado on Thursday. Tri-County Premier League champion Loma Linda Academy (22-1) is the No. 1 seed in Division 5 and opens at home Thursday against Villanova Prep.
Five other Inland teams earned a top-four seeding in their respective playoff divisions: Diamond Bar (No. 4 in Division 6); Norte Vista (No. 3 in Division 8); Redlands Adventist Academy (No. 4 in Division 9); California School for the Deaf-Riverside (No. 2 in Division 10); and Packinghouse Christian (No. 4 in Division 10).
