WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - President Joe Biden completed a summit with world leaders in Germany, discussing future plans for the Russian war with Ukraine. “There’s unanimity on continuing to support what’s going on in Ukraine,” Biden said. “Helping the Ukrainians.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for victory includes Ukraine’s eventual membership in NATO, though NATO leaders don’t believe that will happen this year. “NATO is going to be in Ukraine’s future,” said White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby. “The first thing we have to do is help them win the war.” Zelenskyy has also asked foreign leaders to let Ukraine use western-made long-range weapons to strike inside Russia. Russian President Vladamir Putin has warned, that move would put Russia at war with NATO countries. “Right now, there’s no consensus on long-range weapons,” Biden said. The Government Accountability Office said, as of April, the United States Congress has given Ukraine $174 billion in aid to help fight Russia. “I think Zelenskyy is the greatest salesman in history,” said former president Donald Trump at a rally last month. “Every time he comes to our country, he walks away with $60 billion. Billion!” In Germany, President Biden addressed the price of U.S. support. “I know the cost is heavy. Make no mistake,” Biden said. “It pales in comparison to the cost of living in a world where aggression prevails.” The White House said, ideally, Ukraine and Russia would negotiate an end to the war. Zelenskyy has said Ukraine will not give up any territory or freedom to end the war.
