COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Fans of iconic Disney films like “Cinderella” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” will soon have a chance to see their favorite characters’ costumes up close! The SC State Museum’s newest exhibition, “Heroes and Villains — the Art of the Disney Costume” will showcase more than 70 costumes from the last six decades — offering guests an up close view of Disney’s iconic clothing in films. “This exhibition was created to celebrate the art of Disney costuming. These costumes are spectacular and run the breadth of Disney’s recent history. The oldest costume in the exhibition is from 1971 and it’s a very interesting villain’s costume worn by Bette Davis, the famous actress, and everything since then,” says Becky Cline, Director of Walt Disney Archives. The blockbuster exhibit will display the actual clothing and accessories worn by other Hollywood stars as well. “There’s costumes that are worn by Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, and Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, and the witches from “Hocus Pocus,” so there’s all kinds of wonderful things including Mary Poppins from the newest “Mary Poppins Returns.” We have a costume worn by Emily Blunt which is beautiful,” says Cline. “This is gonna be a magical experience. It’s gonna really bring people together because it’s covering multiple decades, every person coming to this exhibit is gonna see something from their childhood which is really wonderful. And so you’re gonna have neighbors talking to neighbors all about their favorites and then it gives us an opportunity to think about their own creativity,” says Amy Bartow-Melia, the museum’s Executive Director. Creativity that’s also showcased by a Cinderella workshop within the exhibit– featuring four different versions of the popular princess’s gown over the years. “All these costumes have so much thought going into them and there’s such a great craftsmanship to them. And being able to see them up close and see the detail that’s been added is a real special opportunity, especially in this exhibit, where there’s no glass in between them. You get to walk right up to the costume and look at all the detailed work, and you’ll find some very surprising things,” says Cline. Tickets to the “Heroes and Villains” exhibit are on sale now for museum members, and can be purchased in January by the general public. The exhibit will run through October 2025.
