MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Leaders in West Memphis, Arkansas are celebrating Thursday night after the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that there will be two early voting sites in the city. The justices ruled that both the Seventh Street Church of Christ and First Baptist Church must be used as early voting sites. "This is a major victory for our city, ensuring greater access to voting for our community," West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon said in a statement. The Crittenden County Election Commission recently decided not to have an early voting location in West Memphis this year and instead have that location moved to the town of Marion. That sparked a lawsuit by two West Memphis women over the lack of early voting locations in the county’s largest city. A circuit court judge ruled to have early voting at the Church of Christ, but the election commission chairman said he would appeal. Early voting site moved out of West Memphis, sparking court case In its ruling, the state supreme court said Crittenden County Clerk Paula Brown had the authority under state law to select the Church of Christ site for early voting. They also ruled that the previous early voting site at First baptist must also be used because the election commission did not approve a new site. The justices cited a provision in othe law that says once an early voting site is established, it must remain at the same location unless the board votes to change it. Early voting is set to start on Oct. 21 in Crittenden County.
