ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) - Among the thousands of people waiting outside to attend the Kamala Harris rally at the Resch Expo Thursday afternoon were several supporters of former president Donald Trump. They had no intention to go inside to see Harris speak, but wanted to make their own voices heard by standing outside. "I'm a strong, Christian, conservative woman and I want people to know that this is the right thing," said DeeAnn Burkard who was among the Trump supporters. "I'm going to stand for my principles and I'm going to stand for what's right and Trump is right." Several dozen Trump supporters wearing red, white, and blue and at times chanting the name of the former president gathered outside the Resch Expo along Oneida Street. The gathering was peaceful and there was even some civil dialogue between Trump supporters and people there to see Harris. Local 5 News asked several Trump supporters why they feel like the former president is the better choice for Northeast Wisconsinites. Milwaukee woman arrested for OWI, pending charge of firearm possession while intoxicated "Gas prices have gone up, my food prices have skyrocketed out of this world, it's so hard to feed a family today," Burkard said. According to data from Gas Buddy, the average price of gas in Green Bay never was over $3.00 per gallon when Trump was president. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service reports that food prices have increased since the pandemic although the rate of increase has cooled recently. For Ray Skenandore, a longtime worker in the service industry, supporting Trump is a no-brainer because of one issue that is very important to him. "So many people can be impacted by these no taxes on tips," he said. "It's huge." Former president Donald Trump has proposed no federal taxes on workers tips, something that Kamala Harris has also proposed. Skenandore said that Trump talks about this potential policy a lot more than Harris which is a big reason why he supports the former president. The Associated Press recently reported a Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimate that exempting tips could reduce revenue for the federal government by $150 billion between 2026-2035. While thousands of people came out to support Harris on Thursday evening in Ashwaubenon, there's thousands of others in Northeast Wisconsin who want nothing to do with her. "It's a simple question, is your life better now than it was four years ago," said Doug Reich who is the chairperson for the Republican Party of Brown County. "Her radical agenda is totally out of step with the common sense of Midwest values and I don't think it's going to go over well here." Milwaukee woman arrested for OWI, pending charge of firearm possession while intoxicated Wisconsin's 8th Congressional District candidate Tony Wied also said he doesn't think Harris is right for Wisconsin. He blamed Harris for inflation and the situation at the border and said he's confident that Wisconsinites will pick Trump for president come November. He also said that Harris' visit to Northeast Wisconsin is actually a sign of weakness. "Kamala Harris being here so often shows that they're very concerned about what's happening here and their polling here," said Wied. "People are very concerned about the current administration and the policies of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden and we're getting good momentum and talking about the things that we're going to do." An analysis from 538.com, gives Harris a slight advantage in the state of Wisconsin. A group that supports Gaza and wants to see an end to the war in the Middle East also came out to the Resch Expo to make their voice heard on Thursday evening. "We're here to show Kamala that even in a small town like Green Bay that people have had enough of her genocide and there's not a single thing that she can do for us to vote for her," said Daniel Castillo who is part of the Green Bay Anti-War Committee. A spokesman for the Harris-Walz campaign told Local 5 News that over 4,000 people attended the rally on Thursday night at the Resch Expo. He said that the venue did reach capacity and there was "overflow." Local 5 News spoke with several people who said that they had to leave the event before it started because the building had reached capacity.
