BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A serious crash between a police patrol car and a civilian vehicle has killed two people and left a toddler in critical condition, and brought out heroism in residents of a sober living home. It happened at Kern and Niles streets in east Bakersfield. Witnesses told police a civilian vehicle was speeding north on Kern Street and ran the stop sign at Niles Street. The speeding car careened directly into the path of the BPD cruiser, which was heading west on Niles Street where there is no stop sign. The civilian driver was ejected from his car. Man charged in 2-year-old’s death was investigated for abuse in Nevada: report "One subject was down with major injuries," said Sergeant Rex Davenport of the Bakersfield Police Department. "He was pronounced deceased at the scene." That victim was taken away on a stretcher. He was not wearing a seat belt. There were also two passengers in the civilian vehicle. "An adult female was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased," said Davenport. "There was a 2-year-old juvenile in the other vehicle." That child was admitted to the hospital and remains in critical condition. The officers, who were wearing seat belts, were less seriously injured. "Those officers were also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries," said Davenport. "We don't know the full extent yet, however they are alert and talking." Two-alarm response required for structures on fire in southeast Bakersfield Thomas Mosqueda was at a sober living home on Niles Street. He and others at Freedom House heard the commotion outside and rushed to help. "A few of us came out and started helping the officers get out of their car. Their car was hissing as if it was going to turn on fire, and we assisted the other people," said Mosqueda. "I'll give it to the officer that we pulled out. He was disoriented and he was walking as if he was knocked out, but when he started getting his senses, he told us 'I'm okay, help my partner,' and he called in the wreckage. Even though his senses had barely came back, he did what he was supposed to do," said Mosqueda. Mosqueda also said he and others at Freedom House helped redirect traffic away from the crash before more officers could arrive on scene. At this time, it's unknown what factors, other than speed, contributed to the crash, but Davenport said an investigation is underway and toxicology reports are being done on the civilian victims.
