SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Volunteer fire departments all across KELOLAND are on edge Wednesday night due to the dry conditions and strong winds. There's a red flag warning for much of the state, meaning the fire danger is extremely high. County commissioners upset at accusations of treason KELOLAND News caught up with a few first responders who have one eye on the fields and the other on their phones. "Well everything is very brittle and dry," Harold Timmerman said. Timmerman is a farmer near Lennox. But he's also the Lincoln County Emergency Manager and is used to getting phone calls about disasters or other emergencies. As of late, though, he's worried about getting a fire call. "Once it starts in this wind, it'll be tough to put it out," Timmerman said. Because it's so dry and windy, Timmerman is strategically picking his corn today. "We are trying to be as careful as possible that's why I'm working the field from the north side, so if something should happen like start a fire it'll burn over what I've already got done," Timmerman said. Timmerman says he's never seen it this dry and that worries him. The fire chief for the Split Rock Volunteer Fire Department has those same concerns. "Be careful if you're using any type of yard equipment; mowers, ag equipment, grain tractors, stuff like that," Penning said. He says if you do accidentally start a fire don't hesitate. "It's better to call 911 as soon as you can and if we get there and the fire is already put out great, but if not, at least we are there earlier rather than later in the process," Penning said. That's why Timmerman is constantly checking his combine for leaves, corn stalks and other debris that could easily ignite. "You know I had my combine all blown clean this morning, but I'm going to have to check it again in a little bit, I keep a leaf blower in the truck so I can blow it off," Timmerman said. Timmerman says it's extra work, but…. "You can't be too careful in this kind of weather," Timmerman said. Penning says if you have a brush pile that needs to be burned but don't have time to watch it, you should contact them first, but right now you should wait for better conditions.
