A 71-year-old man stabbed earlier this month died at a hospital Saturday, according to El Cajon police officials.
Steven Barron died a week after he was fatally stabbed in the torso on Benedict Avenue near North Johnson Avenue around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 5, Lt. Will Guerin said in a news release.
When officers arrived at the scene they found Barron wounded and another man, later identified as 44-year-old Gregory Carlomagno, armed with a knife, Guerin said.
When officers tried to detain Carlomagno, he ran away, Guerin said.
When he was out of the officers’ line of sight, he then tried to carjack someone driving by, Sgt. Tabatha Latinette said. The victim was able to drive off before the car was stolen, Latinette said.
Carlomagno continued to run away before he was arrested on Main Street, about a block over, Latinette said.
Investigators later learned Barron was giving Carlomagno a ride to a store when Barron’s vehicle broke down, police said. When Barron went to fix the car, Carlomagno stabbed the man, police said.
The motive behind the stabbing was unclear Wednesday. Guerin said investigators believe both men were homeless.
License plate reader cameras helped identify the driver that Carlomagno allegedly attempted to carjack while fleeing from officers, Latinette said.
