As the NFL trade deadline—dated November 5—nears, questions continue to rise about whether the Detroit Lions will be buyers in the wake of Aidan Hutchinson’s loss. We’ve already thrown our preferred additions out there, but now that trades are actually happening across the NFL, so are the rumors. The latest comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who says the Lions have reached out to the New York Jets about pass rusher Haason Reddick. “Haason Reddick would be an obvious player the Lions can inquire about, and I’ve been told they have reached out,” Fowler wrote on Wednesday. “Reddick’s recent hiring of agent Drew Rosenhaus, who is known for getting deals done expeditiously, could improve his chances of either staying with the Jets or facilitating a trade.” The level of communication here is unclear. The Lions could simply be doing their due diligence, or they could be deeply interested in the 30-year-old, two-time Pro Bowler. Their interest level likely depends on two things: Reddick’s interest in a new contract and the Jets’ asking price. Reddick has held out all season in hopes of getting a new contract, and the Jets haven’t budged. If he’s looking for a new deal, it could be tough for the Lions to accommodate that considering this year alone they’ve handed out big contract extensions to Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Taylor Decker, David Montgomery, and Alim McNeill. As for the asking price of the Jets, New York acquired Reddick for a conditional third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles. If the Jets trade Reddick to an NFC team, that jumps up to a second-round pick. So they may be looking somewhere in that range of compensation. This week, Lions coach Dan Campbell has said multiple times that the team won’t rush into a trade, but their eyes remain open. “We’re open to anything, (Lions GM) Brad (Holmes) is working through it, we are not going to be in a hurry,” Campbell said. “Brad would tell you, he’s doing his homework, the crew’s doing their homework, they’re looking at everything. But we’re not going to make a move to make it, it’s got to be right. It’s got to be the right guy and the pieces have to fall in place.”
