The Hopewell Valley girls soccer team checked off one goal when it captured the CVC Colonial Division title outright with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Robbinsville on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs were confirmed as the No. 1 seed for the CVC Championships that get underway on Saturday. It’s next on that check list. “I think we can only get better from here,” senior defender Clara Mayer said. “I’m pretty excited for what’s next up.” First that is a bye straight to the quarterfinals since there are 15 teams in the CVC. Seeds two through 15 play a first-round match on Saturday. PowerPoints were used to determine the seeding. Hopewell (12-2-2; 18.512 PP) is on a 13-game unbeaten streak entering Thursday’s round of cross-division regular-season games. Veteran coach John McGinley knows there’s another level his side has to get to if it’s going to add CVC Champion to what’s shaping up as a memorable season. “We got to finish some more chances (because) we’re leaving too many on the field,” McGinley said. “We got to keep getting better at it. We got to find ways to finish when we have chances to make it a two or three to nothing game.” If Hopewell is the most in-form team headed into the CVC Championships then Notre Dame (10-4-1; 17.325 PP) isn’t far behind. Lauren Diaz’s second-seeded Irish have won nine in a row since a 1-4-1 start to and finished second to Hopewell in a Colonial Division race that went down to the final division day. “I would say our love for playing with each other,” said Notre Dame senior Isabella Lynch when asked what turned the season around. “We just weren’t getting the results we wanted and we didn’t want our season to end that way. The Robbinsville game (a 3-0 win) really motivated us and got us going.” Allentown (8-5-1; 15.431 PP) and Robbinsville (9-4-2; 13.628 PP) rounded out the top four seeds. The Ravens won the head-to-head meeting but the PowerPoints came out in favor of the Redbirds thanks in large part to a tougher non-league schedule and victories over Red Bank Catholic and Notre Dame. CVC Valley Division winner West Windsor-Plainsboro South (7-2-2; 12.432 PP) was rewarded for its breakout season with the No. 5 seed. The Pirates have swept through the Valley Division to the tune of a 6-0 record and held their own against Colonial teams (0-2-2). The most fascinating cutoff day scenario played out between Lawrence (8-6; 11.297 PP) and Princeton Day (6-6-1; 11.215 PP). The teams swapped places after both lost on Tuesday — Lawrence to Princeton and PDS to Allentown — and then flip-flopped back as results from around the state came in and PowerPoints updated in real time. The Panthers won the head-to-head meeting and had two more wins in the Colonial Division than the Cardinals, but Lawrence beat West Windsor South in the opener, a result that has held up well given the Pirates’ campaign. The eight-nine games features a Hamilton Twp. derby with Steinert (5-8-2; 10.26 PP) hosting Nottingham (8-7; 9.609 PP). Princeton (3-8-2; 8.86) leapfrogged West Windsor-Plainsboro North (5-8; 8.566) on Tuesday even though it lost that head to head thanks to its victory over Lawrence. Quarterfinals games are set for Monday, Oct. 21. The semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and the final on Saturday, Oct. 26 are both at Hopewell Valley’s Ackerson Field.
